I've worked in wildlife rescue and other animal care positions. Inane banter making light of an animal's struggle to recover from a major impact is so tacky and troglodyte-ish. When you work with animals of all sorts, you forget that most people don't actually see animals as sentient individuals (or they get as far as compassion for dogs and cats but no further). Can you imagine the same silly commentary for a dog who'd been stunned by an impact? Nope. Open-mouthed panting is a sign the bird is very stressed. I hope there was no lasting damage -- when it tried to fly it couldn't get enough lift.
