I think this is a little melodramatic. Just because someone has hit a rough patch and is working 2 or 3 odd jobs to support their family doesn't mean that they can't be happy. What would be depressing would be if he had no hope of ever improving his situation in life, but if that's the case it's not indicated in the film.

Yes, I am a little confused what the moral of the story is. Don't lie to your kids? Do lie to your kids? Work hard for your kids? People are more or less than they may seem? Have compassion on people? All of the above? It certainly is a bittersweet storyline and very well produced but ultimately maybe too vague. Or maybe like a poem that is intentional.
