1. You also think that mutation means that someone just all of a sudden is born with one extra arm? Mutations are tiny fluctuations that almost never make an impact on a specie's function. Your body's cells produce these mutations many many times a day, but since these mutations usually make the cell dis-functional they die almost instantly. One example of a mutation could be that your hairline at your forehead is placed a few millimetres off compared to what the parent you inherited your hairline had. This doesn't impact your way of living, but it's these subtle changes that are called mutations. Every once in a while a species get a mutation like this that makes them a bit more superior than the other ones of the same species, and in dire times that one will have a smaller chance of surviving, passing on his mutated gene to following generations. One example is the giraffe's neck. Those born with a slightly taller neck could reach those leaves on the trees that the other ones couldn't reach, making it easier for them to find food. - 12 years ago
